All About The MPRE

Happy Monday! I can’t believe this week is my last first week of school, its wild how fast my time in law school has been…

Which means I’m a little closer to the Bar exam. But before the Bar, comes the MPRE, the Multistate Professional Responsibility Exam, the ethics component. Its a 2 hour, 60 question test and the best time to take it is as a 2L or early 3L year, basically after taking Ethics or Professional Responsibility in law school.

I’ve written about my LSAT experience and about law school finals, so I thought it was appropriate to share what taking the MPRE was really like, while I await my results.

To kick things off, how long to study for and what to study with

I am a Barbri rep so I chose Barbri to study for the MPRE, they offer a free prep course to EVERYONE! Its a 20 hour lecture broken up into 12 modules and there is learning questions, a full length outline, additional questions and practice exams.

I studied for about a week and a half prior to the test, doing 1-3 modules a day depending on the length. The professor of the modules is funny and the material isn’t tough, there is just a lot of it and it can get confusing with all the exceptions. If you take notes and read the outlines and do the learning questions you’ll be good!

Practice exams are always your friend, I did one, and if I had more time, which I totally could have I just chose to study when I finished working, I would have done more practice tests.

Personally, I had my friends outline as well which helped but Barbri has a great selection of resources. I’ve heard from classmates that Themis is really good too, if not harder than the actual MPRE itself, so do with that what you will.

The exam is offered 3 times a year, in March, August and November, and you have two days each time to choose from. It is proctored and done at a heavily secured testing center in your area, where they check IDs multiple times and you can’t take anything into the testing center with you. Luckily it goes by pretty fast!

The actual exam for me was last Wednesday and my test time was 10 AM. I finished in about 90 minutes so I was able to check out of the testing site when I was done. For now, we wait for 4 and a half more weeks to get my results and you know I’ll keep you posted!

As always, if you have any questions about law school or want advice, don’t hesitate to reach out, thanks for reading!
